HI FIVE FOR LIFE

5 SEEDS

The quality of our life depends on the quality of the seeds that lie deep in our consciousness.
— thich nhat hanh

When we began designing Hi Five For Life programs, it was essential to ground our approach in a natural metaphor—the 5 Seeds emerged. They spark natural habits in kids...to last a lifetime.

Each of our 5 Seeds: Sleep Better, Move More, Eat Smarter, Relaxation, Share Love address and nurture core life skills to support parents and kids to lead their most empowered life.

SLEEP BETTER

Restful sleep is vital for kids—not only for their growing body, but also their developing brain. Sleep is so important, yet very few kids enjoy healthy sleep cycles. Hi Five For Life creates a supportive forum for kids to learn about, discuss and share their own experiences around sleep.

Kids will experience:

  • Sharing and talking about sleep strategies or challenges.

  • Learning how sleep affects the brain and the body.

  • Exploring the right conditions to get a good sleep.

  • Test driving simple sleep strategies to try at home.

  • Using the Hi Five For Life journal to explore tools to help their sleep experience and share with family.

We need to teach our children that sleep is valuable and a good thing – and the best way we can do that is by mirroring those attitudes, by not just telling them how important sleep is, but by showing them.

MOVE MORE

Hi Five For Life focuses on nourishing the body with body movement and exercise. We know that consistent exercise is a key component to developing a healthy lifestyle, yet many of our kids only experience the city lifestyle—spending time indoors, only exercises inside. Our movement Seed elevates the importance of experiencing nature (even in the winter months) as a setting for moving and connecting to the living world around them.

Kids will explore:

  • The benefits of good exercise outside in fresh air and a healthy dose of Vitamin D.

  • Sharing and talking about their favourite activity.

  • Different ways to move our body through yoga poses, acro yoga and play in nature.

  • Using the Hi Five For Life journal to learn about tools and share with family.

EAT SMARTER

The wonderful thing about food is you get three votes a day. Everyone of them has the potential to change the world.
— - Michael Pollan

We believe that to be food literate, kids need to ask a bunch of questions about where their food comes from. Hi Five For Life Food Education Seed inspires kids to dip their tastebuds into the vibrant diversity of real vegetables and fruits. Kids invariably follow our lead to understanding foods' inherent health properties. They then develop a deeper understanding of how it was taken care of along its life cycle...from soil to mouth. Our mission is to excite and introduce kids to food in all sorts of delicious and multi-layered tastes. Kids often surprise themselves with newfound willingness to try new foods and develop a respect for how real food makes them feel inside and out.

Kids will discover:

  • The taste and colours of real food and what makes it so.

  • Descriptive language to describe their sensory experiences.

  • Exploring various culture's foods.

  • How to read food labels and why to stick to unprocessed, whole ingredients.

  • Exploring strategies around how to seek good, clean, and fair food.

  • Using the Hi Five For Life journal to learn about tools and share with family.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished
— Lao Tzu

With anxiety on the rise and daily stressors increasing, kids need tools for self-management and reflection more than ever. The Hi Five For Life program recognizes the need to teach kids simple mindfulness tools to support kids to calm their own minds and give pause to their busy lives.

It's been scientifically proven that meditation & mindfulness help our overall brain health. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley research discovered that:

  • Meditation boosts our immune system's ability to fight off illness.

  • The practice increases positive emotions while reducing stress and negative feelings.

  • It helps us tune out distractions and improves attentiveness.

  • Meditation fosters compassion and kindness.

Kids will learn:

  • What is a Brain Break

  • Simple Breathing techniques

  • Different guided meditations

  • Resources for guided meditations for home

  • Listening to our inner body

  • Understand what is a mindful vs an unmindful approach

  • Using the Hi Five For Life journal to learn about tools and share with family
